Toby Winarto is a Los Angeles-born violist currently based in New York City who has performed extensively as an orchestral and chamber musician throughout North America and Europe. Most recently, Toby participated in the New York String Orchestra Seminar, which performed 2 sold-out shows at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. Toby has also been co-principal of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in 2016-2018, performing in Germany, Scotland, Portugal, and coast-to-coast in Canada. During the summer of 2018, Toby's string quartet performed Shostakovich's 3rd String Quartet at the Ottawa Chamberfest in the National Gallery of Canada.
In New York, Toby has premiered and performed many works by composers Rongxin Peng and Rob Kapilow in the city's many incredible performance spaces. Outside of his classical training, Toby has also collaborated extensively with his jazz colleagues including Shai Golan, Xander Naylor, Matthew Malanowski, and Jonathan Dely, both on live performances across New York, on recording sessions for CD and video projects.
Toby has performed in masterclasses for Teng Li, Ettore Causa, Sharon Wei, and Peter Oundjian, and worked artists from the Toronto Symphony, the Glenn Gould School National Ballet faculty, the Canadian Opera Company, the Linden String Quartet, Ensemble Made in Canada, the Tokai String Quartet, and the Afiara Quartet. Toby Winarto is pursuing his Masters of Music in Classical Viola performance at the Manhattan School of Music under the instruction of Samuel Rhodes, where he is the recipient of the Ruth Chatfield String Instrument Scholarship.
